The Subway deception

We are all aware of Jared’s incredible transformation from “blimptom” to normalcy by eating Subway sandwiches and the resulting “Eat Fresh” slogan that put Subway on the top of the map.

Being a vegan, I only ate a foot-long Veggie, no mayo or cheese, with mustard and some oil and vinegar, on toasted whole wheat.

When they offered avocado I got a bit skeptical because when Quiznos added avocado it was a paste and not what I had hoped.

So, one day at my local Subway, I asked the woman behind the counter if the avocado was fresh. Her reply, and I really appreciated her honesty despite her lack of marketing skills, was, “Yes, we opened the can this morning.”

That got me to thinking, “what else?”

I have come to learn that every one of their “6 grams or less” items contains preservatives to keep it, if you will pardon the expression, “fresh.”

Okay, they make the sandwich in front of you, but behind the scenes they get boxes of already cut up and pre-packaged processed foods, with chemical additives, that are shipped from Big Food factories to all their locations.

Did you know that the 9-grain whole wheat bread that looks and smells freshly baked contains around 50 ingredients including refined flour, conditioners, MSG, refined sugar and more? Me either! How can a bread so processed ever come close to being a real food?


Did you ever hear of a chemical ingredient called azodicarbonamide? Me either. It’s banned as a food additive in the U.K., Europe, and Australia. But not at Subway. Interestingly enough, if you get caught using it in Singapore you get up to 15 years in prison and a fine of $450,000.

And why? Because it’s primary use is in the production of foamed plastics. But in the good ole U S of A, it can be used as a food additive, a flour-bleaching agent, and a dough conditioner because it improves the elasticity of bread.

The U.K. has found that azodicarbonamide is a potential cause of asthma if inhaled, and for people that have sensitivity to food dyes and other allergens in food, this can increasingly aggravate the symptoms.

Somebody should inform Subway that to make real whole-wheat bread all you really need is whole-wheat flour, yeast, salt, water, and maybe some honey. But that doesn’t really do anything for shelf life or the fact that the stores do not bake their breads.

While all the sandwiches contain chemical additives, refined bleached flour, preservatives, artificial colors, MSG, refined sugars, GMOs, and over 50 ingredients, only three contain nitrates. Yea! Far out! Only three!

Those that contain the nitrates are the Ham Sandwich, the Subway Club, and the Turkey Breast and Ham. Basically, these are processed meat sandwiches and the nitrates contribute significantly to disease.

Studies have shown that it only takes about 1.8 ounces of processed meat to increase the proliferation of cancer by 50 percent, heart disease by 42 percent, and diabetes by 19 percent. These Subway sandwiches contain twice that amount. Yummmmmy!

The American Heart Association, having spent 30 plus years trying to find a cure for heart disease, has given these Subway sandwiches their “seal of approval”. Are you sh&#ing me? Pimps, hookers, and tricks!

The only reason the turkey and ham sandwich contains the nitrates is because of the ham. Does that make the turkey by itself harmless? It’s full of preservatives, chemical flavorings, and processed carrageenan (MSG). You tell me.

The Cornucopia Institute did a study, which revealed that once the food grade version of carrageenan is ingested it turns into a carcinogen in the digestive system.

When we look at all the Subway veggies, like the peppers and pickles, they all look so bright, cheery, and appetizing. Do you think it’s all the artificial colors that make it look that way? Before I forget, the black olives contain an additive called ferrous gluconate. Its only purpose is to keep the olives black.

For you cheese lovers you should know that Subway cheeses contain artificial colors, preservatives, and cellulose that is made from wood pulp. Oh yeah, the “6 grams or less” do not take into consideration the addition of the cheeses or the salad dressings.

Speaking about the salad dressings, the two of the most healthiest sounding – the fat-free honey mustard and the red vinaigrette both contain GMO corn syrup, artificial colors, preservatives, and other chemical additives. P.S. The lemon juice comes in a pre-packaged squirt pack loaded with preservatives.

You would be hard pressed to find one organic ingredient at Subway. Rest assured that the bulk of what they use is conventionally sourced and most likely include pesticides, antibiotics, and growth hormones. It makes me wonder if Monsanto could be a hidden partner.

With all that being said and the harsh reality coming to light, maybe Subway should change their motto to,
Eat Crap!

Always, in my refrigerator and/or freezer I have Bavarian rye bread with sunflower seeds (Whole Foods sells it), Amy’s Sonoma Burgers, homemade hummus, tomatoes, onions, cucumber, and fresh avocados. If I need a “fast food”, the bread and the burger go in the toaster and everything else gets added when they pop up. “It’s finger-lickin good!”

  1. Please, I could have written this article as my own opinion, Unless you have referencing your statistics and where on earth did you get the 50 ingrediants are in the bread from? Please reply with the basis of your information if you have it. I do not eat avocado, but ick..from a can, lol. Glad I don’t eat it. I do know they freeze, pre package their ‘fresh’ vegetables/salads but if I was writing an article I would be referencing where I got that information.

  2. If you need a degree in chemistry to know what you eat then you probably shouldn’t.

    • Nrev.. I have a degree in chemistry and I’ve been telling people that for years. Hardly anyone listens to me.

      As a child someone once told me “If you can’t pronounce the ingredients in something, it’s not real food and you shouldn’t eat it.”

  3. I was just talking about Easy food…. we all need some Easy food readily at hand… leave the Fast food at the fast food joints… Having things available that are easy to prepare keeps us away from the fast food…

  4. It’s fast food—you can’t honestly act like you were surprised by this information…??? It’s a healthier choice than McDonald’s, but it’s still mass produced ingredients for a mass chain.

    • I agree with you. Subway is definitely a healthier choice that McDonald’s or one of the many other chains with fat-laden and over-processed foods.

      • Agreed, a lot healthier than the “grease” food chains out there. Also, if anyone out there was not aware that Subway’s meats and such were processed, you were fooling yourselves. Everyone buys “lunchmeat” it is nothing new that these sandwich meats are processed.

    • Actually I saw a recent study that compared sodium intake, fat, etc and McDonalds was just as “healthy” or healthier than Subway if you took those things into account. Scary.

      Its completely flawed logic to examine subway to this degree of scrutinee. Anyone that thinks they are getting a fresh healthy FOOT LONG sandwich for a 5er is truly a fool.

    • My thoughts exactly. You can buy a 12″ sandwich for $5. You can’t buy all that “healthy” for that price, and then sell it for a profit. It is what it is.

    • Its also not always any much healthier. Lots of people think they’re eating healthy without realizing that their end product is actually 550 calories for a 6″ – and they’ll be eating footlongs.

To Karen Joy just be careful where place say they are doing breads for coeliacs as a pizza place here are doing gluten free pizzas but the thing is they are also making normal pizzas for people on the same bench so guess what we make all our own things here as there are 6 of here that cannot tolerate anything with wheat in it.

      While there are many places that may not take into consideration the issues of cross contamination, there are some restaurants that do. The Mellow Mushroom Pizza Bakers are known for offering gluton free options. In this establishment there is a separate station set up away from the regular food lines, cooked in a oven separate from all the other pizzas and all the staff is trained to know the proper food preparations. While some establishments may not pay attention the specific needs of people I can say that this restaurant does and with an open kitchen people can see for themselves the handling of there food. Doing a little research and exploring options may open up a few options. There are still some restaurant that care and strive to up their standards everyday.

  6. I haven’t eaten at Subway for more than ten years, since my celiac disease diagnosis. I read, semi-recently, that they were testing gluten-free rolls. I was only mildly pleased, but now, after reading this, I’m COMPLETELY not interested in even trying them when/if they come to my city.

    I’m not surprised by all of this — except perhaps the artificial colors in the veggies???? Holy cr@p.

    One thing of note, though, ferrous gluconate is not harmful. It’s a form of iron, and if you take anything that has any iron in it as a supplement, it is almost certainly ferrous gluconate.

    • A SUBWAY MEATBALL GRINDER ALMOST KILLED ME THREE YEARS AGO! After eating it my wife and I became violently ill. It was the first time in my life I passed out and it was in the bathroom, the sickest I have ever been. I will never forget it and I will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER eat at Subway which is nothing but a crime organization at this point putting profits WAY ABOVE people … their food is poison and they know it. The only way you’ll find out is by becoming violently ill now or later.

      • I had the exact same thing happen to me after eating a meatball sub from subway some 10 years back. My symptons were like the worst flu I could have ever had.

      • I also got incredibly sick from one of their meatballs subs when I was younger. I haven’t had another since. I actually threw up in the shower and all the grease from the sandwich left a ring of yuck in my bathtub. It was hell cleaning off.

      • We shared a backroom with a Subway (and a their bathroom) – we have a food type business also. We called the health department on them because the owner was never there, and the kids working there would leave the meat out all day (unrefrigerated) and pans of bread on top of the garbage cans. The health department called the owner and told them that we called and complained instead of inspecting the premises. Things did not change. Besides these two incidents that I mentioned, the bathroom was disgusting to the point where we would just walk down the street to use the bathroom rather than set foot into theirs. We will never eat at a Subway. All the food comes in the backdoor in frozen bags.

    • Most commercial brands of pickles and banana peppers contain yellow #5. It’s just one of those things that most people don’t even consider.

  7. I think it is funny that an organic farmers market is your suggestion to fresh vegetables. What stops so many people from realizing that you can grow your own vegetables in your back yard or at a city owned park?

    • What? You expect these folks to get there hands dirty and do REAL work? Perish the thought.

      • You know, the whole idea that everyone should be able to grow their own veggies is actually really asinine. First of all, not everyone has the time to grow their own veggies, and that’s not because they’re lazy. Most Americans are busy working incredibly long hours at thankless jobs for too little pay and then coming home to take care of their kids and try to fit in what quality time they can with their families before dropping into their beds like rocks to try and get a few hours of sleep before they do it all over again the next day. I know from experience (I garden!) that tending a veggie garden is time-consuming and labor-intensive. Not everyone has that luxury, since our economic system is so jacked up that people can work their tails off and still barely be above the poverty line. It must be nice to HAVE a backyard, to have the resources and time and knowledge and education that it takes to grow a garden. It must be nice to not live in abject poverty or in a place where you actually can’t find space to garden. Check your privilege before you assume that anyone who isn’t growing their own tomatoes must be lazy or incapable of “real” work.

      • So those that don’t eat organic foods aren’t hard working? Hmmm. Faulty assumption, at best.

      • Seems like it may be time to get together with over freedom loving, responsible for your own family adults, and vote that HOA out. What in the hell are they doing in your back yard???? I can see the front and maintaining appearances but in the back???? May be time for you to go indoor hydroponics. If anything hits the fan and the grocery stores take a hit, your neighbors will be wishing they had gardens. Shame on the HOA.

    • It’s not always as simple as everyone makes it out to be to grow your own produce. I tried last year to grow my own peppers, tomatoes, etc. and without pesticides. I harvested ONE tomato and ONE pepper and the first bit of basil before some unknown creature are the rest. I didn’t have the time or resources to keep trying then. I will try again this year but it’s not without it’s investments so I don’t think it fair that you say that no one wants to do “REAL work”. Some people have too many obligations to be able to put in the time needed to make a garden grow, especially if their efforts are eaten sometime in the night…,

    • I grow my own vegetables and go to the farms to get my fruits, I know I cant control what is used on the fruits but I still would rather do that then go to stores. I can all my own stuff and us NO preservatives. When I say it is fresh, believe me, it is fresh

    • or you have an amazing garden all summer and fall, can for the winter, but still can’t have fresh garden food all winter and spring.

    • Amen! The only true way to know what you put into your body is if you grew it, picked it, and or killed it yourself. I grow as much as I can and I’m big on buying from small town farms!

    • Yeah, it’s because most of us are dumb and lazy. Not because maybe we live in apartments or lead busy lives or just aren’t interested in planting a vegetable garden.

    • not everyone is fortunate enough to have a place for a garden, especially not to feed a whole family for the entire year! and not all communities have a community garden.

  8. Yeah that’s a good point. While we’re at it let’s take a look at the whole foods debacle. It seems nowhere but an organic farmer’s market is going to have food from nature.

  9. Good report on the Subway; the taste always told me to get the hell away from that stuff, whateever it was, because it tasted tainted.

    But now I want to know what’s in that Bavarian rye bread, Whole Foods long ago persuaded me they were not exactly what you would call a whole person kind of citizen.     And where did those tomatoes come from? Are they certified non-GMO? Are they designer tomatoes that grow into a cube for easy packing, but taste like wet cardboard?

    I appreciate the story about Subway, but why leave out the story about what you chose to eat as an alternative to Subway’s whatever-it-is?
